Motivation and Executive Function

A lack of motivation can be directly linked to poor executive functions.

Sustaining focus and maintaining goals, and getting tasks done – as in assignments, is dependent on the strength of one’s executive function.

Executive functions are a set of cognitive processes that help an individual plan, monitor, and successfully execute their goals. These processes include attentional control, working memory, inhibition, and problem-solving. When a student struggles with initiating, planning, organizing, prioritizing, and sustaining attention, maintaining motivation is at risk.

There are many reasons why getting started on tasks is difficult. Finding the motivation to start and finish a task can be difficult for all of us.

Focusing on specific strategies helps improve motivation.

  1. Focus on the journey, not the outcome: Focusing on the journey can help you stay motivated. Staying motivated can be easier when you focus on your journey.
  1. Create and repeat a new positive habit: Creating a new habit can help you stay motivated. When you repeat the habit, it can help you stay motivated to continue working towards your goals.
